Poetry: Gillian Clarke, former National Poet of Wales, will read her lyrical and moving poems. If you have never heard Gillian read, you are in for a mesmerising treat. If you have heard her before, then you know you will want to be here for this! Gillian has been awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry and the Wilfred Owen Award. Selected Poems (Picador) was published in 2016, Zoology (Carcanet) in 2017, and her version/ translation of the 7th century Welsh poem Y Gododdin, appears this year from Faber.

Speakers: Dinah Mulholland (left), Chisomo Phiri (centre) and Megan Talbot will form a knowledgeable and rousing panel, chaired by our own Helen Sandler (right).

Dinah is a political activist who has campaigned around domestic abuse, women in prison and austerity. Dinah was the Labour Party candidate for Ceredigion in the 2017 General Election and is involved in setting up a local branch of Acorn Tenants Union.

Chisomo is the NUS Wales Women’s Officer. She was elected on a manifesto of campaigning to end period poverty, encouraging women to run for leadership, and tackling sexual harassment. She aims to create a strong, intersectional movement.

Megan is an associate lecturer in law at Aberystwyth University and is studying legal recognition of non-binary genders internationally. She is co-convener in the Aberystwyth Interdisciplinary Gender Studies Research Group (aber gender).

Helen is a writer and editor who runs Tollington Press and comperes Aberration. She has been involved in theatre and events for women and LGBT+ people for many years.

Live music: Musical interludes from Cerys Hafana (pictured, top) on the Welsh triple harp. Cerys is a talented young musician who lives locally. She is a member of the National Youth Folk Ensemble, and last year played at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient with Tŷ Teires and Robin Huw Bowen, and on the Aran Islands with Cerrig Camu. She will play her own compositions and tell us a little about the history of the instrument.

Joan and Linda of Bright Field
Bright Field

Bright Field sing folk harmonies such as Georgian, Corsican, Shape Note, British traditional and sacred music, as well as modern compositions. They enjoy the way voices will lock into or lean on one another. The group has changed its make-up over the years, but local singers Linda Gwillim and Joan Mills, who join us for the evening, have been a part of Bright Field since it began back in 2001.

Exhibition: on display will be WEN’s exhibition of posters of significant and inspiring women, past and present, who have worked for equality in Wales – including Gillian Clarke. We will pick out some of these women with readings chosen specially.

Inclusive fabulousness: All welcome at this inspiring evening. Whether you identify as female, male or non-binary, whether you are trans, intersex, queer, lesbian, gay, bi, straight, unsure or wotever… you are very welcome at all Aberration events.

Language: Event mainly in English.

Desert Hearts. Rainbow Film Festival 2016

Sunday 16th October 1.30pm

The Old Market Hall Cinema, The Square, Shrewsbury
(Donna Deitch, 1985. USA. 1hr 36 mins)
Certificate 18

Desert Hearts

Desert Hearts 1 Desert HeartsIn 2016 the appeal of Desert Hearts may be less in the story and more in the landmark staging of the first lesbian love story on-screen that didn’t end up in suicide or ménage à trios! A true love story, considered very risqué at the time, Desert Hearts was the first to portray lesbian relationships as multi-dimensional and real, rather than a caricature or somebody’s wet dream. Having said that, Donna Deitch’s film is a passionate, beautifully controlled drama about making choices and exercising the heart.

Desert Hearts4If you want a taster of the story … imagine Reno. It is 1959 and a 30-something teacher from New York turns up in search of divorce. She has an up-tight bun and a bunch of nerves when she encounters a younger woman – sexy, capable and living on a ranch with a Patsy Cline soundtrack! This is brilliant, beautiful and not-to-be-missed!

Desert Hearts 5We asked a few women to comment:

Desert hearts! There’s a blast from the past. One line that has always stuck in my head….she just reached in and hung a string of lights round my heart….. Classic

I think the woman on the door thought I was too young to be watching such a salacious film!

I was asked my age when I went to see this at the MAC in Cannon Hill Park, back in 1985. I was 24 at the time!

Summertime: Rainbow Film Festival 2016

Saturday 15th October 8pm

The Old Market Hall, The Square, Shrewsbury

Summertime (La Belle Saison)
(Catherine Corsini, 2015. France / Belgium (subtitles). 1hr 46 mins)

SUMMERTIME_still-01In 1971, Carole, Parisian teacher and feminist campaigner and Delphine, rural farm worker and practical problem-solver – meet and fall in love. They luxuriate in each other’s company in a symbiotic relationship, which combines a sexual awakening for Carole and a political awakening for Delphine.

SUMMERTIME_still-10

When Carole follows Delphine back to her family farm, experiencing rural life at its most sun-dappled and sweaty, the two find lesbianism and feminism are not as easy in the countryside.

SUMMERTIME_still-02From vibrant scenes of civil unrest on the streets of Paris, to the lushly photographed rural landscape that make up the latter section of the film, Director Catherine Corsini has crafted a beautiful and sensual film about two women in love, and the reminder that “We can’t turn back. We can only move forward”.

Women Like Us & Women Like That: Rainbow Film Festival 2016

Saturday 15th October 1.30pm Double Bill

Women Like Us (1989) & Women Like That (1991) – followed by a discussion with the Director Rosalind Pearson. UK. 55 mins & 30 mins

Women_Like_Us(1) First screened in 1989 as part of Channel 4’s groundbreaking TV series ‘Out on Tuesday’, these two documentaries explore and revisit the lives of older lesbians in the UK from different cultures, classes and backgrounds from the 1920s to that present day (1989). Their stories incorporate ideas about lesbianism, the changing image of lesbians, love and romance, the pressures that led some of them to marry and the later discovery of their lesbian identity with the subsequent coming out stories to their children.

Putting this in context, only 6 years earlier Channel 4 had launched ‘One in Five’, a weekly programme for the gay and lesbian communities which led to calls for Channel 4 to be scrapped! Women_Like_That

We have been trying to get hold of these 2 films: Women Like Us & Women Like That  for years so we are delighted to be able to screen them and welcome Director Rosalind Pearson to join us for a discussion, Chaired by Jane Traies. We hope other special guests will join us to update you 25 years on!
