19/11/22 Cabarration: Aberration’s sparkling LGBT+ cabaret night storms back onto the stage at Aberystwyth Arts Centre. Comedy, music, dance, drag kings and more! All welcome. £14 (£10 concessions).
Starring: Sian Davies, Welsh Ballroom Community, Mr Brake Down, Misha & The Kings, Jane Campbell… plus raffle and surprises, all hosted by Helen Sandler.
ARTISTS
Sian Davies (by Andy Hollingworth)
Sian Davies is a comedian, MC, presenter and writer from the North West of England. We loved her show at L Fest and are delighted she accepted our invitation to come to Aberystwyth for Cabarration! Sian’s droll observational material puts an insightful spin on the everyday. She is the driving force behind sell out fringe phenomenons Best in Class and Comedy Queers. She is working class and queer, and fiercely proud of belonging to both communities.
“A very funny observational stand-up … imagine a queer Peter Kay with more emotional literacy and a quiff like young Morrissey.”
Welsh Ballroom Community
Welsh Ballroom Community put on a stunning show of dancing and voguing at the National Eisteddfod and we are thrilled that some of the troupe will be with us at Cabarration. You may have heard of queer ballroom culture via Drag Race or the TV drama Pose, or perhaps you are sufficiently seasoned to remember the 80s documentary Paris is Burning and the dancers in Madonna’s Vogue. But now, the revival has reached Cymru! The Welsh Ballroom Community has received international recognition since its creation in Cardiff during lockdown in 2020. Founded by Leighton Rees and supported by Kyle London Tisci from The Impeccable Haus Of Tisci, the community has evolved into a vibrant celebration of queer identity in Wales. Aberystwyth, get ready!
Misha and the Kings are a fabulous Aberystwyth four-piece rock band, ready to whisk you away to escapism in its truest form! They have firmly put their stamp on a few classics, sprinkled with their own brand of energy, attitude and sparkle. Expect to be surprised, expect to get dancing. Their recent gigs at Bank Vault proved they are not to be missed. Special guest appearance, Doja Deluxe. Facebook >>
Jane Campbell
Jane Campbell (known to her friends as Maj) is a familiar face to Aberration audiences after wowing us with her spoken-word performances before lockdown. Now she’s back with some spellbinding new work, having recently won the 2022 Disability Arts Cymru creative writing award. In 2021, Jane also won the Geoff Stevens Memorial Poetry Prize with her debut collection Slowly as Clouds published by Indigo Dreams: www.indigodreamspublishing.com/jane-campbell
Jane’s poem ‘The Gardener’ was featured on BBC Wales programme Giants in the Sky, and she performed at the first-ever Powys Pride this summer. For the past twenty years, Jane has lived happily in a handmade home as part of an off-grid community in West Wales.
Mr Brake Down is an AFAB drag king originally from Cardiff, who now resides in the beautiful city of Chester. When he’s not charming crowds with impersonations of obscure celebrities like Tom Waits and Joe Exotic, Brake can be found sporting sinister gothic fashions, glitzy showbiz get-ups and singing his heart out to lively crowds. Whether it’s comedy, hosting, music or merriment, Mr Brake Down has exactly what you need to drag up your life.
Cabarration is a cabaret show to celebrate LGBTQIA* performers and community. As always, Aberration puts on welcoming and inclusive events, and aims for an anti-racist, trans-inclusive space, with good disabled access. Everyone is welcome as long as you love the big rainbow umbrella as much as we do! So in answer to a question we get asked, yes our straight friends and audience are very welcome. And so are those who are still unsure or don’t like labels. Do bring your friends and family and do have a great night!**

Dathlu Hanes LHDT // Celebrating LGBT+ History
Fascinating and fun readings, talks, videos and surprises. Hear Jeffrey Weeks chatting about his radical youth in the Gay Liberation Front, Jane Traies reading from her sexy sapphic version of the French Revolution, and the first exclusive recording of a raunchy queer ballad from centuries ago, rediscovered in 2022!
Hosted by Helen Sandler in the Performance Studio (aka Round Room). We are trying to be covid-aware and expect about 30 people at distanced tables with windows open 🙂 We recommend everyone takes a covid test at home before attending.
Estimated timings 5.30pm to 9pm with long interval at 6.30 for you to buy a meal in the cafe or drinks in the bar and have a chat, plus: Meet the authors: Book signings. Raffle tickets in aid of AllOut, focusing on queer refugees from Ukraine https://campaigns.allout.org/ukraine-fundraiser
Programme
5.30 Choice of ice-breakers with our friendly crowd:
1. Queer Museum: bring an object you would put in a queer museum and meet curator Mark Etheridge.
2. Sloganising: If Aberration makes its own banner, what slogan should we use? (You can sit down with a felt tip if chatting’s not your thing.)
3. In the Pink: take a look at the mini banners we made in Sarah-Joy Ford’s workshop last month – if you took part then please bring your banner!
Welcome – host Helen Sandler
Pride is a Protest – the inspired folk who took part in the banner workshop say a few words about their artwork.
Liberty! – Jane Traies reads from her wonderful new lesbian historical novel Liberty (Tollington Press). ‘A compelling, spellbinding historical romance’ – VG Lee. Published under the name Jay Taverner – the pseudonym for Jane and her co-author Jacky Bratton. Their novels stretch across space and time, but all have a connection to Brynsquilver, an ancient cottage in the Shropshire countryside, close to the Welsh border. Liberty brings together sailor girls, French aristocrats and revolution. When Rebecca ‘Jude’ Wiston breaks from her puritanical family in Salem, Massachusetts in 1789, she little knows the passions and dangers that await her. @JayTaverner
Crossdressing women: Norena Shopland, author of A History of Women in Men’s Clothes (Pen and Sword) brings to life fascinating stories from the past with an illustrated talk. Norena is like the keeper of the LGBT+ history of Wales! @NorenaShopland
Billie-Gina Thomason (above) on queer ballads – a specially filmed talk about her analysis of queer ballads from England and the light they shine on undocumented lives. Billie-Gina is an academic at Liverpool John Moores University with a special interest in gender identity. She can’t be with us in person but we’re so glad we’ve found a way for her to share her work with you all. @Billie_Gina
The New Old Ballad: Norena tells how a queer ballad in the Welsh language, ‘Lanciau Bro Gwalia’, has been thrillingly rediscovered in the archives – with exclusive new recording by Cerys Hafana, plus new English translation, ‘Lads of Fair Walia’.
Sloganising aloud: sharing our ideas for Aberration slogans
Mark Etheridge of National Museum of Wales updates us on the queer collection he is gathering for the nation with help from the LGBT+ community of Cymru. @CuratorMark
Much-loved and inspiring writer Jeffrey Weeks chats about his packed life and his new autobiography Between Worlds: A Queer Boy from the Valleys (Parthian), with our homegrown historian Paddy O’Malley. Emerging from the intense and thrilling (and sexy) gay rights movement of the 1970s, Jeffrey brought radical sexual politics to sociology.
Paddy O’Malley
Jane Hoy introduces Ceredigion Museum’s story project and plays our Lesberados song, as recorded by Aberrationistas in lockdown!

We would also like to thank Bottle and Barrel for the raffle prize. Bottle and Barrel are a craft beer bar located in Aberystwyth and are big friends of the LGBT community. They have just announced a new live music and events venue opening in Aberystwyth too, The Bank Vaults. This will be opening within the next month or so and we hope to do some fab collab events with them there in the future. Thank you to Zac and all the Bottle and Barrel team.

These event details are here as part of our archive but the event has now passed.
Join us on a voyage through history, from antiquity to our own lifetimes! As we can’t manage to celebrate LGBT+ History Month and International Women’s Day separately this year in the Weird Times, we’re unashamedly biased towards women speakers for this special event.
Cheryl Morgan
Norena Shopland
Mark Etheridge
7pm CROESO / WELCOME from co-host Ruth Fowler, followed by…
Cheryl Morgan speaking on ‘Trans People in Celtic Britain’. This talk will look at the evidence for Gender Diversity in early Britain, from the Roman invasion through to the legends of King Arthur. Cheryl is a writer, critic and publisher with a strong interest in the history of trans people. She is co-chair of OutStories Bristol, and is a regular speaker on the LGBT+ History Month circuit. (In fact, that’s where we met her and first dreamed of inviting her to Aberration.)
7.30pm Norena Shopland launches her Welsh Pride timeline e-mag along with our co-host Jane Hoy. Norena has been an inspiration to the rest of us as we dig into the LGBTQ+ history of Wales. Now she’s about to make that history even more accessible with this new treasure trove. Norena is also the author of lively and informative books like Forbidden Lives: LGBT Stories from Wales. DOWNLOAD THE E-MAG NOW! https://www.rctpride.com/welsh-pride-timeline/
Mark Etheridge from St Fagans (National Museum of History, Amgueddfa Cymru) will tell us about his mission to queer up the archive. As curator of LGBTQ+ history, he is keen to include Mid Wales. As well as objects, documents and photographs, Mark is collecting oral histories.
Discussion: What would you put in a queer museum and why? Bring along your object and let’s chat in smaller groups (or just listen if you prefer).
8pmJane Traies is the editor of new book Free to Be Me: Refugee Stories– interviews with members of the Lesbian Immigration Support Group (LISG) in Manchester. Jane previously spoke to us about Now You See Me, her volume of oral history interviews with older lesbians. She has spent the last year working with LISG members (and our own Helen Sandler) to produce this moving and important new collection.
BOOK OFFER: Free to Be Me is out soon from Tollington Press. Mention Aberration for a £2 discount when you pre-order direct from Jane: nowyouseeme@btinternet.com (reduced to £10 + postage).
Maggy Moyois a contributor to the book and will share a journey of self-discovery. Maggy fled from her highly conservative home country in Africa to the UK. The attitude of the authorities here to lesbian asylum seekers has caused further distress to herself and her friends in the Lesbian Immigration Support Group. Maggy is a tireless human rights campaigner and works for Right to Remain, campaigning to end immigration detention in the UK.
8.30pm The Romani Cultural and Arts Company in Cardiff recently launched their Gypsy, Roma and Traveller LGBTQI+ Spoken History Archive. Chris Lee will tell us about this exciting collection of interviews and the social movement behind it. Chris is a community champion and researcher at the company, and conducted the oral history project with Isaac Blake and Daniel Baker. In 2019 she spoke at the Senedd at the first GRT LGBTQI+ conference in the UK.
Ruth Fowler
9pmRuth Fowler presents her cult quiz: ‘Who Wants to Win Three Quid When This Is All Over?’ with a special queer history focus.
9.20pmJane Hoy then presents ‘Out In Aber’ – our contribution to the new Amgueddfa Ceredigion Museum virtual tour:
Rosie Collins, a retired top international scientist, and Sara McAleese, a very short midwife from Somerset, together founded the mythical ‘Wrecked@TheBoatClub’. This monthly night out for all kinds of queer women, in a dilapidated old building on Aberystwyth harbour, is now memorialised on audio.
Followed by ‘Lesberados’ lyrics from our previous oral history workshop about Wrecked – now put to music by talented musician Cerys Hafana.
Jane Hoy (second from right) with the crew, including Sara and Rosie, at last year’s tour from the museum
